PASSI: Process for Agent Societies Specification and Implementation

2014

PASSI (a Process for Agent Societies Specification and Implementation) is a step-by-step requirement-to-code methodology for designing and developing multiagent societies, integrating design models and concepts from both Object-Oriented software engineering and artificial intelligence approaches using the UML notation. The models and phases of PASSI encompass anthropomorphic representation of system requirements, social viewpoint, solution architecture, code production and reuse, and deployment configuration supporting mobility of agents. PASSI is made up of five models, concerning different design levels, and 12 activities performed to build multiagent systems. In PASSI, the UML notation i…

Comparison of two different approaches for harmonic distortion sources assessment

2021

The paper focuses the attention on the comparison of two approaches for power quality assessment in the electric grid. Both approaches are suitable for investigating the harmonic pollution source and discovering if the harmonic source comes from the customer or the utility grid. The two approaches have the same purpose but they are deeply different. The first approach is based on the knowledge of the customer and utility equivalent impedance while the second is based on single point measurement at point of common coupling PCC. In this paper, the advantages and drawbacks of the two approaches are investigated also supported by a case study.

Harmonic sources detection in power systems via nonactive power measurements according to IEEE Std. 1459-2010: theoretical approach and experimental …

2010

In this paper an enhanced decision-making strategy is presented for the detection of harmonic sources in power systems able to detect also which is the prevailing nature of the disturbance (nonlinearity or unbalance). It makes use of some simple indices, which are evaluated by means of the measurements of some nonactive power quantities, proposed by the authors and derived from the approach of the IEEE Std. 1459-2010. The decision-making rules for the proposed strategy are presented and discussed by means of simulation and experimental tests. The results obtained are presented, showing the effectiveness of the proposed strategy for the detection of the dominant harmonic source upstream or d…

Understanding 802.11e contention-based prioritization mechanisms and their coexistence with legacy 802.11 stations

2005

The IEEE 802.11e task group has reached a stable consensus on two basic contention-based priority mechanisms to promote for standardization: usage of different arbitration interframe spaces and usage of different minimum/maximum contention windows. The goal of this article is to provide a thorough understanding of the principles behind their operation. To this purpose, rather than limit our investigation to high-level (e.g. throughput and delay) performance figures, we take a closer look at their detailed operation, also in terms of low-level performance metrics (e.g., the probability of accessing specific channel slots). Our investigation on one hand confirms that AIFS differentiation prov…

Introduction

2014

Nowadays, software engineers face a wide range of particular application domains such as electronic commerce, enterprise resource planning, mobile computing, self-organisation, pervasive and adaptive computing, etc. The resulting heterogeneity and required functionalities call for complex systems and open architectures that may evolve dynamically over time so as to accommodate new components and meet new requirements. This is probably one of the main reasons why the agent metaphor and agent-based computing are gaining momentum in these areas.

A single-point approach based on IEEE 1459-2000 for the identification of prevailing harmonic sources detection in distorted three phase power systems

2009

This paper deals with a novel single-point strategy for the detection of prevailing harmonic sources downstream or upstream the metering section in three-phase power systems. It is an enhancement of a previous strategy, already developed by the authors and it is based on the comparison of three non-active power quantities which are based on the IEEE Std. 1459-2000 approach. The method does not require any spectral analysis of voltages and currents because it is based only on the separation of the fundamental components from the harmonic content of voltage and current. In the paper, the effectiveness of the strategy is investigated by means of simulation tests which were carried out on a IEE…

The OpenUp Process

2014

The Open Unified Process (OpenUp) is an iterative design process that structures the project lifecycle into four phases: Inception, Elaboration, Construction, and Transition. It is part of the Eclipse Process Framework and embraces a pragmatic, agile philosophy that focuses on the collaborative nature of software development. It is a tools-agnostic, low-ceremony process that can be extended to address a broad variety of project types. The project lifecycle provides stakeholders and team members with visibility and decision points throughout the project and makes them able to manage their work through micro-increments.

Out-of-Band Signaling Scheme for High Speed Wireless LANs

2007

In recent years, the physical layer data rate provided by 802.11 Wireless LANs has dramatically increased thanks to significant advances in the modulation and coding techniques employed. However, previous studies show that the 802.11 MAC operation, namely the distributed coordination function (DCF), represents a limiting factor: the throughput efficiency drops as the channel bit rate increases, and a throughput upper limit does indeed exist when the channel bit rate goes to infinite high. These findings indicate that the performance of the DCF protocol will not be efficiently improved by merely increasing the channel bit rate. This paper shows that the DCF performance may significantly bene…

The Industrial Applicability of PEA Space Charge Measurements, for Performance Optimization of HVDC Power Cables

2019

Cable manufacturing industries are constantly trying to improve the electrical performance of power cables. During the years, it was found that one of the most relevant degradation factors influencing the cable lifetime is the presence of space charge in the insulation layer. To detect the accumulated charge, the pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) method is the most used technique. Despite the wide use of the PEA cell, several issues are still present. In particular, the PEA output signal is strongly disturbed by the acoustic waves reflections within the PEA cell. This causes the distortion of the output signal and therefore the misinterpretation of the charge profiles. This, in turn, may result…
